North Greenland

North Greenland

Destination North Greenland is defined from the famous Ilulissat Icefjord to the polar extremes of the far north. Along a coastline stretching thousands of miles lie small communities based on hunting and fishing, in a land ruled by the polar night in winter and the summer’s midnight sun.

The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Greenland. Most known perhaps the Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world. It annually calves over 35 km3 of ice, i.e. 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice and more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. You can take boat tours or even kayaking to see the icebergs up close and witness the incredible spectacle of the glacier calving, where huge chunks of ice break off and crash into the water below.

In addition to its natural beauty, Ilulissat is also home to a range of cultural attractions. The town has a rich history dating back to the Inuit people who first settled the area, and you can explore the Knud Rasmussen museum, the newly award winning Ilulissat Icefjord Center and city center to learn more about traditions and way of life.

Accommodations in Ilulissat range from small guesthouses and hostels to more luxurious hotels, and there are several restaurants and cafes serving local cuisine and international fare.

Further north, the Uummannaq archipelago and kayaking adventures in Upernavik open up a remote world of experiences culminating at the top of Greenland in the small town of Qaanaaq, where subsistence hunting is a way of life.

In 2025 you most likely will be able to fly directly to Ilulissat when the second of Greenland’s new international airports is expected to be inaugurated.
