The capital region

Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, is an Arctic metropolis with a small town feel, shaped by nature and known for its cultural diversity. As the largest city in Greenland, Nuuk offers a diverse range of activities and attractions, making it the perfect destination for all types of travelers.

One of the best ways to experience the Capital Region is by exploring the city’s rich cultural history. The Nuuk Art Museum showcases Greenlandic art, while the National Museum provides insight into the country’s fascinating past. You can also take a stroll through the colorful historic quarter of Old Nuuk to soak up the local culture.

When it comes to accommodations, Nuuk offers a variety of options, from modern hotels to cozy guesthouses. The food scene in Nuuk is also worth mentioning as you can try traditional dishes such as seal, musk ox, and arctic char, as well as sample local beers.

For those seeking outdoor adventure, the Capital Region also offers a wealth of activities. You can take a boat tour to explore the stunning fjord, which is the second largest fjord-system in the world, or hike in the nearby mountains for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Are you not into hiking, you can also explore the top of the mountains around Nuuk by helicopter.

While Nuuk can be seen as the colorful heart of Greenland, the smaller communities of Paamiut south of the capital and Kapisillit in the Nuuk Fiord are places to kick back and spend time in the outdoors, either en route with the coastal ferry Sarfaq Ittuk or on a weekend holiday.

Today you travel to Nuuk and the Capital Region from Kangerlussuaq by plane. From late 2024, the new international airport in Nuuk is expected to be inaugurated. At this point you will be able to arrive in Nuuk directly from at least Copenhagen, Denmark, and Keflavik, Iceland. Or you will reach the port of Nuuk with Sarfaq Ittuk exploring the West Coast of Greenland.

In conclusion, the Capital Region of Greenland is a destination ideally as a city break in Greenland. It mixes shopping, whale watching, skiing, and fine dining into a cosmopolitan experience with a backcountry twist where innovative, adaptive people, and trendsetting artists meet office workers, fishermen and hunters. Organic Greenlandic ingredients meet Thai spices in gourmet restaurants and cozy takeaway stores in Nuuk.

Legends and traditions are reinterpreted by local artists, musicians, and designers. So, pack your bags and head to the Capital Region.
